Makeup Kit Favourites: Foundation

We’ve picked a few favourites from the huge bewildering plethora of foundations on the market. As makeup artists, we have to have a range of products in our kit so we can cover (literally!) every skin type, tone and people’s requirements (like allergies, being vegan etc.). We always end up using certain things more than others, so here’s our makeup kit favourites that can be used for everyday too:

Aveda: Inner LightTM Mineral Tinted MoisturiserAveda Inner Light Tinted Moisturiser

  • The oil-free formula is lightweight, moisturising and goes on easily to create a lovely smooth hint of colour.
  • Contains no parabens, is not tested on animals and comes in a 100% recycled tube.
  • We’ve found it good on mature skins as it doesn’t sit in lines and adds a soft dewy glow.
  • Has a gentle scent and is SFP 15 too.

Coverage: Sheer.

Finish: Soft natural sheen. For a matte finish, dust translucent powder over the top.

Colour range: Seven colours from light to dark.

Skin type: All skin types, including mature and sensitive. Skin that does not need a lot of coverage (can use over concealed blemishes). Good for men.

Laura Mercier: Tinted Moisturiser

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser

  • A lovely product that goes on easily and smoothly, leaving a natural soft sheen.
  • Comes in original and oil-free (for oily skins).
  • The only negative is the packaging – the product can leak into the top, making a mess, plus it’s wasteful.
  • Not tested on animals.

Coverage: Sheer.

Finish: Soft natural sheen.

Colour range: 10 shades from light to dark.

Skin type: All. Use oil-free for oily.

Afterglow Cosmetics: Organic Mineral

  • A loose mineral foundation free of bismuth oxychloride, animal ingredients, nanoparticles and preservatives.
  • As well as minerals, the foundation also contains botanical ingredients, many of which are organic.
  • Afterglow are BUAV certified as cruelty-free.
  • Organic Mineral Foundation is suitable for vegans, as are their synthetic taklon (non-animal hair) brushes.
  • We like this mineral makeup for its non-animal-tested status, easy application and lovely soft finish that covers yet looks like there is nothing there.

Airbase: Airbrush Foundation

  • Airbase is a silicon-based liquid makeup designed for use through an airbrush, though it can also be apply with a brush or a damp sponge.
  • Great for high definition (HD) film and television work, photographic, bridal and everyday wear.
  • Airbase foundation creates a lovely soft natural look and once it is on, it stays on, whatever the weather.
  • When used through an airbrush, you only need to use a few drops to cover a face, so the bottles have a lot of applications in them.
  • You can get a complete airbrush and incredibly small compressor kit from Airbase too, perfect for home and occasional professional use.

Ketts: Hydro / Hydro Proof Foundation

  • Hydro is a water-based formula that is free of fragrance, parabens, silicone, oil  and animal testing.
  • Not just foundations, there are blusher and corrector colours too.
  • Mix with moisturiser to create a tinted moisturiser.
  • Can apply with an airbrush, damp sponge or a flat top “stippling” brush for a flawless finish.
  • Blends really well, is self-setting (don’t need powder) and is breathable.
  • Hydro Proof is a long-lasting waterproof, smudge-proof and completely non-transferable formula – it can be used in water, humidity and rain without shifting!
  • Can only be used with airbrush as it dries super fast!
  • Alcohol-based and it doesn’t mix with silicone- or water-based products.

Le Maquillage Professionel: Foundation

Le Maquillage palettes

  • A natural wax-based product.
  • Apply with a sponge or brush.
  • Have to work the product into the skin and it doesn’t dry right away, allowing for blending.
  • Comes in palettes of 6 coordinated colours, or the 36-colour Grande Palette. The large palette is fantastic for your kit, and lasts a long time.

Coverage: Sheer to full.

Finish: A soft, matte finish.

Colour range: Foundations cover all skin colours from light to dark. Also, colours to neutralise, contour and conceal, and some warming blush colours. Also makes SFX colours e.g. death and breaking down.

Skin type: All skin types.

FACE atelier: Ultra Foundation

Face Atelier foundation

  • A silicone-based liquid foundation.
  • Oil-free, fragrance-free and non-comedogenic.
  • Moisture and oil resistant.
  • Has a built-in primer (so no primer is needed).
  • Good pigmentation levels.
  • There is a pro range in lightweight and compact bottles designed for pro makeup artists.
  • Not tested on animals.

Coverage: Medium to full.

Finish: Natural or dewy. Self setting so doesn’t need powdering.

Colour range: Light to dark. Can adjust using Zero Plus and Zero Plus Plus to darken, Zero Minus to lighten and Heat to add warmth.

Skin type: All, especially sensitive and mature.

Supercover Professional Makeup: Foundation

  • A cream foundation that is water resistant and contains no alcohol, lanolin, mineral oils or perfume.
  • Highly pigmented, meaning a little goes a long way.
  • You can get inexpensive sample pots from the website, allowing you to try before you buy the full size product.
  • Comes in individual pots, and can provide a palette consisting of all the colours – great for the pro makeup artist.
  • Use powder to set.

Finish: Natural.

Colour range: 40 plus colours from light to dark with warm and cool undertones, so there is a colour to suit everyone.

Skin type: All skin types. Good for covering skin pigmentation issues and tattoos. Works well on mature skin.

RCMA: Colour Process Foundation

  • RCMA (Research Council of Makeup Artists) is a professional makeup range, established in 1962 by film makeup artist Vincent Kehoe.
  • The foundation is a highly-pigmented cream (about 50% is pigment), therefore only a little product is needed to create the desired coverage – each pot lasts a long time.
  • Based on vegetable oils and pure waxes, the foundations contain no perfume, lanolin, animal extracts, petrolatum or mineral oil.
  • Use powder on a powder puff to set.
  • You can buy it in individual pots, 4-colour pots or, for the makeup pro, there are a couple of really great 18-colour palettes with all the popular colours.

Cinema Secrets: Ultimate Foundation

CInema Secrets palette

  • Cinema Secrets is a professional range, founded in 1985 by Maurice Stein, an Academy Award-winning makeup artist.
  • Ultimate Foundation does not contain mineral oil, lanolin and petroleum products.
  • The highly-pigmented silicone-based cream product is water- and perspiration-resistant.
  • A lovely creamy product that looks natural on the skin and covers well without looking heavy.
  • When set with powder, it is long-lasting and won’t crease or crack (it was designed to stay put under filming conditions).
  • Comes in three sizes: small pot, larger pot and a series of handy 5-colour palettes (which fit nicely in a kit).
  • The pigment level makes it a good concealer.
  • Cinema Secrets do not test any products on animals.

Coverage: Full. Covers skin discolouration and tattoos. It can be mixed with Cinema Secrets amazing primer to thin it for a lighter coverage.

Finish: Matte/natural.

Colour range: Over 50 shades with warm and cool undertones to suit us all.

Skin type: All skin types.
